Commissioning Guide for the Fire Safety Stick Pro

For commercial installations such as in buildings or vehicles, the following is a guide to the necessary items which are recommended as part of the commissioning of the Fire Safety Stick Pro

Items needed for a full commercial installation of the Fire Safety Stick Pro:

• Standard FSS50 or FSS100 model (Or a Utility pack version comprising of extra mounting clip and tamper tag fitted)
• Tamper Tag – fitted to the handle and bottom striker cap.
• Installation Date Sticker – to be applied to the black plastic handle.
• Maintenance Sticker – to be applied to the tamper tag.
• Fire Safety Stick Wall sign – Identifying the model, the classes of fire certified for and basic instructions. These are available as rigid photoluminescent sign typically for installations within buildings, or as a vinyl sticker with permanent adhesive, typically used for installations within commercial vehicles.
• Fire Safety Stick Inspection Record sheet – this can be downloaded as A4 pdf here and provides the appropriate documentation (where required) of the regular maintenance inspections of the Fire Safety Stick. Remember, this can be carried out by the responsible persons for the business and does not necessarily need to be carried out by external fire safety technicians.

Commissioning

Typically, your Fire Safety Stick Pro supplier would have supplied the sticks with the tamper tag, installation and maintenance stickers already fitted to the FSS, providing it was specified. If the items were supplied separately, not fitted, then please apply the stickers as shown in the image. For instructions on fitting the Tamper Tag, please follow this video link.

Mounting the Fire Safety Stick Pro

Fix the mounting clips to the surface, recommended with mounting screws (not supplied), or suitable adhesive. Please note the Fire Safety Stick is not restricted at all with regards to the positioning/orientation of placement.

Wall Signage

The sign should be installed just by the installed Fire Safety Stick. In the case of the rigid photoluminescent sign, it will need some form of adhesive (or mounting pads) to hold it in place. For the vinyl wall sticker, simply peel off the backing paper and apply it to the surface. Then, for either version, with a permanent marker pen, tick the box on the sign for the corresponding model, along with the location ID (optional).

Once installed, record the date on the installation sticker placed on the handle and sign it.

FSS Inspection Record Sheet

Record the date of installation, as well as location, FSS Model and ID number (if used) on the FSS Inspection (or maintenance) Record sheet. We would recommend that the sheets used for the commercial installation are then secured to the main Fire Safety Logbook for the premises.

The Difference between Servicing and Maintenance for Fire Extinguishers

The Fire Safety Stick needs no servicing during its life-cycle of 15 years, it just needs to be visually inspected or maintained and logged by the building owner or responsible person. Traditional fire extinguishers need to serviced at least every year. This is to check the pressure within the container, simply checking the gauge is not sufficient. O-rings need to be replaced, pipes and weights professionally checked. It should also be noted that at end of life, traditional extinguishers cannot be just disposed of, but because they are pressurised systems, they must be professionally recycled. 

Of course, if you prefer, you can have your existing fire or security company carry out the maintenance checks and log them in your on-site fire safety logbook, whilst they are on site. The Fire Safety Stick is not pressurised and once discharged, can be easily domestically recycled as all that remains is an aluminium tube and a plastic handle. The solid resin inside it does not decompose at all and again needs no servicing at all.
