All major types or classes:

Class A – Solid Combustibles – eg paper, plastics, textiles, wood* etc.

Class B – Flammable Liquids – Petrol, diesel, Oil, Alcohols etc.

Class C – Flammable Gases – Methane, Propane, Butane etc.

Electrical Fires – Rated up to 100,000volts – ideal for electrical appliances, wiring, workshop machines, even 3 phase, regular and lead acid batteries. NB this class does not include lithium batteries – this is a separate classification.

Class F – Cooking oils and fats in the kitchen – yes, this is one of the very few extinguishers that is safe to use in the kitchen. No more dangerous reaching over to use a fire blanket over a burning stove.

*It is not suitable for established coal or log fires and bonfires. Although, it will remove the oxygen to initially put the flames out, because of the heat generated within the coals or logs, the fire will re-ignite.

The simple answer is no. It is possible for small computer or phone batteries will be extinguished but be aware that due to thermal runaway, it is likely that the fire could re-start. In the case of e-scooters and e-bikes, we would strongly recommend not to attempt to tackle these fires even with a certified lithium battery fire extinguisher, as these fires are very unpredictable and likely to exploder as well as giving over very toxic gases.

For this same reason the Fire Safety Stick is unsuitable for the drivetrain battery in electric vehicles (EVs). Although of course the stick is fine to deal with fires from the ancillary devices onboard powered by the regular 12/24-volt systems.

Well firstly, its not like any other type of extinguisher, it doesn’t use CO2, powder, foam at all. It works by chemically interfering with the oxygen but only from the flame.

IT DOES NOT AFFECT THE USER’S OXYGEN AT ALL (though you should always be aware of the risks of smoke from what is actually burning)

Inside the metal tube is a solid inorganic resin, which consists of potassium nitrate. This is complete safe and stable. When activated, a chemical reaction occurs that breaks the resin down to nitrogen gas, this inert gas pushes out the active agent which is potassium free radicals or ions. These ions need to bind onto the oxygen around the flame, and in doing so removing the oxygen at the flame level, it extinguishes it. These ions then become potassium oxide but because these particles are so small (around 3-4 microns in size), they appear as a smoke or vapour but are completely safe to you and the environment.

Absolutely! Although it works by reacting with the oxygen around the flame, it does not affect the user’s breathable oxygen at all. Inhaling the vapour is completely safe too, unlike dry powder extinguishers, which are now advised not to be used in confined spaces.

The discharging vapour and by-product of the stick is completely safe for humans (including children) and animals. Plus, it is completely environmentally friendly too.

Yes absolutely! We have tested activating the Fire Safety Stick in a small room to ensure that it doesn’t impact breathing or visibility. We did this in a closed room 3m x 3m. It was very much like someone was “vaping” in the room, both visibility and breathing were not impeded too much at all. Of course in a real fire situation, the smoke inhalation from the fire would be a much greater danger.

In fact, one of the great advantages of the Fire Safety Stick is that in confined areas, you can activate it, and leave to work in the room whilst you escape. No need to hold a trigger to keep it going!

Its really easy, but it’s different to other extinguishers so it’s important to make sure the customer (and their family)  does read the instructions as soon as they get it so they are ready in an emergency. These are on the box, on the stick and the leaflet inside. Plus, there are QR codes that link to a web page and video too.

Simply take the top protective cap off and discard that, its only to protect the black striking resin at the top of the stick. Then take the bottom striker cap from the bottom of the handle. Holding the stick by the handle, make sure you are pointing the top away from yourself and anyone else nearby.

Press LIGHTLY, the red/brown abrasive surface of the striker cap against the black resin at the top of the stick. And flick the two together, just like striking a match. But don’t press too hard.

The black resin will then ignite, just like a match and the white vapour will start to discharge from the stick.

The suggested shelf life is at least 15 years, though providing the simple visual checks are carried out by the owner, it can still work perfectly well at 20 years and beyond!

Actual discharge times of the models are either 50 seconds minimum, or 100 seconds minimum.

Just compare that to a traditional powder extinguisher weighing 1kg to 2kg – these would only have a discharge time of just 7 seconds – providing it has been correctly maintained, though often they haven’t been!

It is important to always note, that for ALL handheld extinguishers, including the Fire Safety Stick, they are only intended for small fires at the early stages, once a fire becomes too large or established, then it is no longer safe to tackle the fire directly.

The Fire Safety Stick has a unique advantage though, you can just activate it and if the fire is within a confined space, leave in that room as you then escape to safety, calling the fire service. The stick will continue to discharge in your absence, filling the space with its firefighting vapour and so repressing the fire on its own.

No, once it’s been used, the remaining stick should be disposed of in the waste or it’s parts recycled (metal tube and plastic handle). And of course, a new one purchased to replace it.

No, once it’s started to discharge, it will continue to do so until the resin inside has completely been converted to the active agents, typically after over 50 or 100 seconds. However, this is an advantage as it means it can be left, without the user holding it or even be present while it continues to discharge and repress the fire.

It is different in many ways. Firstly, it is not pressurised at all and so does not need to be serviced annually. It lasts much longer, typically at least triple the lifespan of most other extinguishers. It is completely clean, leaving no damaging mess or residue. Of course, it’s much lighter and compact and yet has a much longer discharge time. For example, a 1kg dry powder extinguisher (gross weight 2.2kg) has a discharge time of just 7 seconds (if it has been correctly serviced), even the lightest Fire Safety Stick (215g) has a discharge of at least 50 seconds minimum.

This is one of the great things about the Fire Safety Stick. It leaves no damaging mess at all! In fact, there has been several users that have had car engine fires, extinguished with the stick and once checked to make sure it was safe to do so, was able to continue with their journey! This means that there is only the damage from the fire itself. Unlike powder extinguisher which often cause more damage from their discharge than the fire itself.

This is just one reason why the insurance companies that understand the Fire Safety Stick, love it so much!

Most other traditional extinguishers must be serviced every year. If they aren’t there is a real possibility that they will fail to discharge correctly for their full intended time.

The Fire Safety Stick never needs any servicing by qualified extinguisher technicians throughout its 15 or beyond years. This along with its triple lifespan means the stick is much better value.

Unlike most other fire extinguishers, the Fire Safety Stick is not pressurised and so does not need any annual servicing by a qualified, professional technician.

However, there are some simple basic visual checks we recommend the owner to carry out on a regular basis. These include, is the bottom striker cap present and is there any sign of damage (you need this to activate the stick) and is the black resin on the top still firm and not broken off/damaged at all?

As soon as it has finished discharging, still be careful holding the stick and where you place it as the metal tube may still be hot. It will quickly cool down though.

You can either safely dispose of the spent unit in domestic waste or separate the plastic handle to the empty aluminium tube and recycle accordingly.

It is not possible to recharge the stick to re-use it at all.

Well, it can be possible and some places have done so, but before you rush to swap them all out, it is not quite so simple. There must be an updated independent Fire Risk Assessment completed, and if only if it is suitable for the Fire Safety Stick to be incorporated into the fire safety strategy for that workplace premises. There it might be possible, there are upgrade commercial versions of the sticks, including signage and documentation available. The sticks are manufactured in Italy

Although you might this is possible, in practice, especially in case of an emergency with a fire, this is far too unreliable a system and so therefore it is crucial you always have the bottom striker cap fitted and ready to use in an emergency.

Yes, you can, these are available from main distributors of the Fire Safety Stick or from Fire Safety Stick head office. Depending on the environment it is installed in, it might be worth fitting a tamper tag to secure the bottom striker cap to prevent it falling off but can easily be pulled off to strike in case of an emergency.

No, the unit remains fully intact and is not pressurised at all. Only if exposed to extreme temperatures  – 350 degrees Celsius (that of a fire!) would it then activate   and sends out an aerosol* stream.

*This is the descriptive process that an aerosol spray is created with the particles and Nitrogen gas during the activation process. The FSS is not an aerosol in the conventional sense ie a pressurised can under constant pressure controlled by a nozzle.

The non-explosiveness of the Fire Safety Stick aerosol fire suppressant is officially recognised, value binding, and has a European validity by the Italian Ministerial Decree 04/04/1973 by Homeland Security 557/PAS.7317-XV.J.(3766) (Prevention and monitoring, possession of illegal fireworks and classified as non-exploding), in conformity with Ministerial Decree D.M. 4.4.1973 (G.U. n. 120 dated 10.5.1973) further to the advice by the Advisory Committee for Weapons Control as well as by the Prefecture in Turin, Italy.

Good question! Well firstly, it is CE and UKCA approved and marked. It is fully certified to extinguish Classes A, B, C, Electrical and F fires. Current British Standards are based purely around pressurised fire extinguishers and the necessary servicing they require. However, the Fire Safety Stick is uniquely not pressurised at all and needs no annual servicing, so therefore falls out the scope of their standards. Incidentally, it is worth noting that British Standards is a commercial organisation, funded in part, by the manufacturers of pressurised extinguishers that require annual servicing.

It doesn’t even come under the BS6165:2019 for small disposable fire extinguishers, as it’s a non-pressurised, non-aerosol type. Therefore, they would need to create a whole new approvals process for this type of extinguisher which has only been introduced to the UK market since Spring 2019.
